Side count of Aces

In the cards counting systems, the betting efficiency and playing efficiency are two main factors to be considered to gauge the system. There is a tricky thing that the higher a system's betting efficiency is, the lower the playing efficiency becomes. In other words, a system which has no point value assigned to an ace will decrease betting efficiency in game, with an increase in playing efficiency. You know why? That is because of the unique role of the Ace card in blackjack. As for betting, the Ace is an excellent card since it can give the player a chance to gain blackjack which pays 3 to 2. But with regard to playing, it really sucks to hit an Ace. For instance, if you have a 13 in hand, hit and get an Ace, there is nothing worse than this. Thus, to better deal with Aces, an additional strategy called Ace side count is introduced.

As a matter of fact, there is an exact dividing line in choosing a counting system. Some counting strategies treat the ace as zero (ace-neutral), while some count the ace as negative (ace-reckoned). The ace is unusual as it is both a high card and a low card. According to the fact mentioned above, the Ace is not for playing efficiency since it does not bust the cards and is welcome in betting efficiency. So the player should decide to take use of side count or not based on the different situations. Generally, ace-reckoned strategies (e.g. Hi-Lo, KO) are better for shoe games, because betting is more important in those games, and ace-neutral strategies (e.g. Hi-Opt I, AO II) would be best option for single-deck, with playing being treated as an important aspect in pitch games.

Of course, if you can not find a best strategy to balance both playing efficiency and betting efficiency, you can use an ace-neutral strategy for PE, with a side count of aces for betting purposes. In this case, at the blackjack table, players should ignore the ace to yield higher PE and at the same time use a side count to detect additional change in expected value for the player to find out a good betting opportunities. This would be the ideal situation in winning efficiency, although it to some extent shows more remarked difficulty in game playing.

Despite that to keep a side count of aces is great for a player to achieve a balance of BC and PE, and even that the player could pursue a side count of every card that would probably achieve a perfect situation in PE, however this would make the card counting more complex at an exponential rate as this would give rise to over-tasked burden on the human mind and to a large extent decrease the ability of computation. Thus, the ease of use is another consideration to be suggested. There is a rule demonstrating that the simpler the better.
